Cotton Banner w/ tassels, about 60” x 60”
Unit 8, Camberwell College of Arts, University of the Arts London
This handpainted cotton banner is the final representation of the Unit 8 research project titled “Whose History?”. The brief was to explore under-represented design, aka works outside the typical graphic design ‘canon’. Research for this project began from 70s psychedelic rock posters and led to the Peruvian musical genre chicha and its subsequent design style. The banner was handpainted using stenciling and screenprinting techniques to mirror chicha posters, formatted onto cotton to embody Peru’s history. The text tells the story of the genre, reflecting storytelling imagery woven into traditional garments. Combined with a listening experience of classic chicha songs, the audience experiences the history and fruition of the musical genre to learn about design beyond the typical lens. Another aspect of the project was a written assignment. The final banner was showcased in Camberwell’s BA Graphic Design Unit 8 exhibition in Peckham.
